Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop are both common tools in 2D rendering of product design concepts. Here I use a hybrid technique that showcases many of the features that make AI and PS an unbeatable combo for 2D product illustration, using a sports shoe as an example.

  • Really good tutorials, Adam (I looked you up on LinkedIn). I learned a ton, and I'll say hi to Sam Aquillano next time I see him.

  • @muddstrosity Cool man, glad you like it! Ha, yeah say hi to Sam for me for sure. Speaking of, I gotta email that guy. Thanks for the reminder :)

  • It is certainly possible to achieve the same results using only AI, but it is much faster and more intuitive to do the subtle shading in PS.

  • Great tutorial! I for one would love to see a Modo tutorial focused on footwear.

Ahh also, if you wanted to get really fancy, you could use the Warp tool to flow the texture along your model to give it another level of realism. You could also use the Envelope Distort tool in conjunction with a Gradient Mesh in Illustrator to get a similar effect. So many ways to achieve the same result! Cheers.

  • I learned more about illustrator in this tutorial than I learned in 4 years of a developing design school. thanks much. much props. props to you sir.

  • thank you so much for this tutorial.. I learned to much! Really awesome.

  • this tutorial was great!!!!!! but is it possible to do all the shadings and texture in illustrator only without using photoshop?

  • This is a wonderful tutorial and has definitely helped learning illustrator! Not to mention how to successfully integrate an illustration into photoshop. Thank you so much.
