This is a 3-degree of freedom wind tunnel demonstration of exactly what happened in the crash video (note the figure-8 made with the wing tip vibration). Our guess is that the plane picked up enough speed while decending on approach to exceed the flutter speed.
We were at the competition and saw the plane explode and decided to model it for a class. Dimensions were approximated from pictures on the team's website.
The root section is bass wood and the others are balsa. There's an aluminum pin at quarter chord that the wing can pivot about for the pitch freedom. The pin was inserted into a 2x4 block set into the window and pinned in place there to keep it from falling out.
