Original song about our teenage swimming hole. The place is real, the rest of the story is make-believe.
Lyrics:
The Pit

Verse 1:
There was a quarry on the outskirts of town
It filled with water when the mill got shut down
They built a fence to try to keep us away from it,
But we found a gap where we could sneak inside,
Over to a cove on the other side,
Thats where wed meet, in the summertime heat,
We used to call it The Pit

Verse 2:
Sometimes wed swim, sometimes wed walk,
Sometimes wed simply just sit and talk,
Sometimes a pair would slip away to kiss and pet
There was a special girl I used to see - we became lovers at seventeen,
Me and Beth, out of breath, on a blanket at The Pit.

Chorus:
As teenagers we grew up at The Pit
We learned some things that well never forget
We started out as awkward kids, we left as young adults
Some teenagers who grew up at The Pit.

Verse 3:
I went to Nam in 68, Beth went to school at Ohio State,
We never saw each other after that.
She married well, her career went far,
I returned home and opened up a bar,
Ive been mixing drinks and pouring beer since I made it back.

Verse 4:
I doubt if there really was a chance,
I dont think we could have kept our romance,
A successful college grad and a hardened burned-out vet.
But when I think back and picture her there,
I see her wearing nothing but a ribbon in her hair
Sharing our bodies, sharing our souls, on a blanket at The Pit.

(Chorus and Instrumental)

Verse 5:
She stopped in yesterday, I bought her a beer,
I hadnt seen her for forty years
She said Im sick, the doctor told me this is it
So I had to see you just one more time,
I needed to tell you whats been on my mind,
Ive loved you Johnny, I always have, since I met you at the Pit.

Outro:
Then she leaned up over the bar, kissed me gently, and walked to the door,
Turned to me and said Good-bye Johnny
I could hardly believe my ears, shed loved me too for all those years,
All I could say through my tears was Good-bye Beth.
