This seems to be advice decided on by a committee, rather than something based on scientific study.

Hi there. Yes, the advice has been decided by a committee, and they based their decision on the available scientific data. Guidelines and advice will always be developed by a number of people, looking at scientific research, to make sure that the evidence is interpreted correctly.

Remember, it is important to eat a variety of fruit and veg as their nutrient contents vary.
Also to get the most benefit we should eat an overall healthy diet and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Is there any research to show the benefits of five 'portions' of fruit and veg a day? Thanks for the help.

Good question! Many studies have looked at the associations of eating fruit and vegetables with certain health outcomes . A report by the World Health Organization reviewed all the benefits of fruit and veg and found that consuming at least 400g per day was associated with a lower risk of some diseases, including heart disease and some cancers. This is the equivalent to around 5 portions per day (5x80 g).
