This song pops into my head every now and then. Aimee Mann, professional hooktress - I respect anyone who can use language as a weapon and as a salve.
for me, really, its near on impossible to pick a favourite song of Aimee's, everytime i think, yeh, thats the best, i listen to the next in my collection of her tracks and think to myself, actually, no, i like this one best. but when i really think about it, i probably listen to nightmare girl the most. the lost in space album/special edition, is my most listend to album and nightmare girl is definately up there with humpty dumpty, the scientist, lost in space, invisible ink& its not.
@bacholerno2 I think you made a pretty good analysis there. Aimee's lyrics are generally pretty melancholy, if not downright morose. But some songs still have a melodically whimsical quality about them, and this one fits that bill. One rare "almost cheerful" tune she did was a BEER song of all things - "Ballantines" off her recent album "F****** Smilers." Another chipper-sounding tune.
@beerbrain420 I totally agree about it not fitting. I read in an interview Aimee Mann said that Lost in Space was the sort of album she expected to see a rejected girl listening to on her prom night whilst sitting in her window (strange ;p). Somehow I don't think this fits the mood. The lyrics arn't necessarily happy but the song almost feels upbeat... Like something good is coming.
@GabeLogan2000 I often wondered myself why this SUPERB Aimee tune didn't make it onto the original issue of Lost in Space. Maybe it didn't quite fit the very dark mood of that album..........
