I'm a bit of a fan of British TV presentation, so when the opportunity presented itself to learn some tricks in Windows Movie Maker I thought I'd try this.

This is a mock ident for Rediffusion, a former British TV channel (the weekday ITV contractor for the London region from 1955-1968; the predacessor of the more famous Thames). Had the channel continued past 1968 and into the era of color (or "colour") broadcasting in the UK, their logo might have looked something like this.

The logo is a still image I created using Inkscape, while the "aged film" effects were done by combining several animation effects in Movie Maker. Ideally, I'd have the adastral shape rotating counterclockwise and some kind of legitimate "form-up" animation; these are all things I can learn to do.

  • What was associated rediffusion? Early ITV?

  • @martybhoy72 In point of fact, it was THE first company to be awarded a broadcast franchise (London Weekday) in the system now known as ITV1. It lasted from 1955-1968, when Thames Television took over the third London TV channel... in the real world, anyway. This mock is based on a "What If?" scenario where Rediffusion continued past 1968, into the era of 625-line UHF broadcasts.

  • where's the RL fanfare?

  • I'm working on a revised version with a full form-up animation, and I do have the ('60s) fanfare recorded as a sound file for use for that purpose. I am, however, going crazy learning how to animate this image the way I want to. I almost have to do it in Flash, but I'm having a hard time understanding it...

  • That is superb stuff. Good work!

  • I think because I tried to be as authentic as possible with the design - that is, it looks like a design that might believably have been used by a hypothetical post-1969 Rediffusion London. I drew upon other ITV regional logos for my inspiration.

The film-aging was a touch I added to simulate what it might have looked like after years of telecine wear and tear. Again, if it *were* real, that's how it might have aged.

  • Historically accurate in terms of the graphic design down to the lines and scratches on the screen which all depict how TV did look and more importantly felt in pioneering days of colour in 1969. Great imagination I though of what could have been!

  • How can it be an historically accurate mock, if it didn't exist?

  • This is probably one of the most historically accurate mocks I've seen. Plus, it's well executed and properly aged.

  • Thanks. I was trying to emulate the style of the late-'60s-early-'70s regional logos; simple, but bold and stylish. I've also always loved rounded boxes, and for some reason I always associate this typeface and color scheme with '60s British TV.

This is the "daytime" version; I've also created a "nighttime" variant in which the black and blue areas are inverted. I'll wait to post that until I get the animation effects I want down.
