http://www.ucsf.edu/news/2011/04/9740/extreme-dieting-does-it-lead-longer-lives UCSF researcher Janet Tomiyama and long-time calorie restrictor Tadd Ottman discuss a milestone study on health and aging. In some species—for example fish, mice, worms and yeast—animals experience much longer life spans by simply consuming less calories. The Calorie Restriction With Optimal Nutrition and Aging (CRONA) study at UCSF hopes to determine if the same process can be applied to humans. The study is being done in collaboration with Elizabeth Blackburn, who won a Nobel prize in 2010 for her discovery of telomeres, and Cynthia Kenyon, who is considered a pioneer of longevity research.
