Mit Der Elegante Rest

Bleibe stehen,
Ich komme euch zu sehen,
Im Winter oder Frühling
Wie die Liebe durch die Luft

Ganz still
Stehe ich vor der Bühne
Erinerrungen machen,
Vielleicht weinen oder lachen
Mit Der Elegante Rest

Hand in hand
Gehen die Leute in Frieden,
Regierungen nie mehr kriegen
Wenn wir zusammen sind

Ganz still...

Die Liebe ist der Grund warum,
Es macht Liverpool bis Leipzig stumm,
Liebe überquert die Grenzen
Die uns voneinander trennt

Bleibe stehen...

This song is dedictated to my very good top friends from Leipzig, Germany, Der Elegante Rest. There are a number of themes in the song and reasons for writing it but first and foremost I love their music. I was listening to a new song of their's in June this year and immediately wanted to go to Germany and see them live. So I wrote them a myspace comment to tell them so and as I did my thoughts were filled with melody and the first chorus of the song was born. I love the muse. This is only the third song I've written in my mother's tongue and I am always filled with anxiety and trepidation that my German isn't good enough to write a song. Songs are for singing to people and therefore, in my opinion, ought to be articulate to some extent. I don't mind writing in simple language. In fact saying beautiful things in simple language is one of my songwriting ambitions but I do mind making mistakes in my language and appearing silly.

The very beginnings of this song are from very long ago in my childhood. They come from an idea I developed after listening to the song 'Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey' from the Paul & Linda McCartney album 'Ram'. I remember thinking about what McCartney meant by 'Hands across the water' in the song. Don't get the impression I was in the habit of thinking deeply about McCartney's songs because I wasn't. It was just a curious thought. Over the years I've realised that reaching out to people is a worthwhile thing to do and the more you make friends with people from other countries the less likely you are to go to war with them. It's goverments that cause wars and require their citizens to fight them not the ordinary people. Of course, there are complications to my theory like propaganda and brainwashing and hatred and prejudice and jingoism: the list is endless but if we, the people, go hand in hand in peace and love our governments will find it harder to take us to war.

Love is the weapon of the people. If I see something I love I do my best to say so. The internet has now made it easy for us to communicate with each other. It brings like-minded people together and completely undermines the propaganda we are subjected to every day. Already this year I've seen France's The Reign Parade in concert in Dudley, England. My brother, Steve was with me that day and The Reign Parade's performance was beauty of the highest order. I spoke to singer of German band Parka on myspace and the next day my brother and I saw them play a fabulous concert in Köln. On the same trip we also saw Herbert Grönemeyer in Köln and Katze, Panda and Rosenstolz in Berlin. I've loved European music for most of my life but it has always been near impossible to find out any news or to hear new songs without having to go on holiday. These days I discover news almost instantly. Last month I ordered a CD by a Uruguayan band from Argentina. Had soldiers been able to do that in 1982 would they still have believed Thatcher's horrible, hateful propaganda? Would it have been harder for her to sink the Belgrano? I'm sure one of the men who died on that ship would have been able to sing or write a beautiful song.

I love music and I love people who make beautiful music. Therefore I love Der Elegante Rest and one day soon I will see them live in concert in Germany or wherever. I'll stand quite still in front of the stage and listen to their beautiful music. I'll make memories of what I see and bring them home again to England where they will stay with me forever. The Der Elegante Rest concert will join the rich memories I already possess of concerts by the likes of The Reign Parade, Francis Cabrel, Bap, Keimzeit, Black 47, Rosenstolz and Parka. I'll tell my memories to anyone who'll listen. The more people who hear about the beauty created in other lands, the more we cross the borders that keep us apart, the less likely we are to want to press the button that sinks the Belgrano.
