I think, too, it has to do with a general lack of appreciation for the other side of sports. One side of is, of course, competiton -- but the other side is "fraternity" -- the idea of competing but in good faith, bringing out the best in your opponent, & vice-versa.
Now the competiton ... and the stress ... and the increased danger ... and the egotism ... all of those things existing *especially* in football -- it's all too much for good sportsmanship to survive.
These are 1961 hi-lights. That crazy 67 yard TD play at :42 was the only TD pass Bob Renn (#10) ever caught. It was against the Bills on 11-23-61. (Titans won 21-14)
Nothing like Saturday afternoons at the Polo Grounds. Often more on the field than in the stands though the "crowd" was announced as 45,582. I went to the games after my Saturday morning bowling league at Stadium Lanes across the street from Yankee Stadium All Hail Al Darrow, Larry Grantham, Clyde "Bulldog" Turner etc. and Harry Wismer, who my mother dated waaaay back in high school.

@9162vb48 Good observation. I wonder why things were so different back then??

The Polo Grounds...you could play two games there at once!

Notice how, back then, there was no stupid-ass "rejoicing" when a touchdown was scored.
The idea of *sportsmanship* actually meant something.
