"Victory Chimes" ex "Edwin and Maud" on WBAL-TV 11 - 1985

Here are all three segments of a special series about the schooner "Victory Chimes" originally broadcast on the 5pm news by WBAL-TV 11 (Baltimore, MD) in 1985.




The three-masted schooner "Edwin and Maud" was built in Bethel, Delaware in 1900. For nearly half a century, she hauled lumber and other cargo up and down the eastern seaboard. In the mid-1940s, my grandfather, William Seaford Stevens, Sr., was the one of the last captains of "Edwin and Maud" while it was still in use as a cargo vessel. My great-grandfather, Ira Stevens, acted as captain for a time after it was purchased by an investor in 1946 and converted into a "dude cruiser" operated by Chesapeake Bay Vacation Cruises.

In the 1950s, "Edwin and Maud" was bought by yet another investor and moved to Maine, at which point she was re-christened "Victory Chimes." Aside from a brief stint in Duluth, Minnesota in the late 1980s, the "Victory Chimes" has remained in Maine ever since.

In 1997, "Victory Chimes" was named a National Historic Landmark, and in 2000 she returned to the Chesapeake Bay for a centenary celebration. At age 85, William Stevens was able, on more than one occasion, to revisit the "Victory Chimes" while it wintered at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland.

In 2003, "Victory Chimes" was represented on the Maine quarter, part of the U.S. Mint's state quarter program that began in 1999.
