Move the "maybes" out of the way. To detour from the truth of his mental illness is to gloss over the brilliance of him as a musician, a singer, a composer -a freind, a husband, a father, a human being. I know where I was when I heard of his death -I was struck dumb, tears began to fall because I was already missing him.

sounds like he was clearly mentally ill-possibly paranoid schizophrenia. sounds like he was paranoid that night at the recording studio having some auditory hallucinations. those hallucinations are so real and can lead to something that seems like suicide, but clearly they are afraid and running away from whatever those voices are.
