  • If i am JUST starting this hobby and have a 20 piece picking set, is this a good investment? I might get the cut-away or whatever you recommend. Thanks in advance.

  • Sorry, I mis-read the question, I think. There is no better way to improve picking skills than to have a practice lock that can be easily rekeyed. The EZ ReKey locks take the place of virtually thousands of single locks because you can pin them any way you want, from easy to ridiculously difficult. A cut away version also gives you insight as to what you are doing right or wrong in your practice sessions, as you can see exactly what happens. It's a great investment for any beginner.

  • I see... thanks for the help! Would you recommend the schlage or the kwikset? I was going to go for the schlage cutaway because if i mastered that, I figured I'd be able to do the kwikset no problem.

  • Generally speaking, that makes sense. It will take you a little longer, probably, to get results with a Schlage at first, but once you get the 'hang' of using a pick in that keyway it will be easier to use picks in most other keyways. However, all keyways have their own characteristics and you should ideally have practice with as many of them as possible.

  • I see... Well, I am sure I will be purchasing this practice lock, but I have 1 more question. When purchasing, it says 6pin and it adds 3 more dollars. If I buy the 5 pin one, does that mean I will receive a lock with 6 holes and just the 6th hole empty or only 5 holes with 5 pins?

  • If you purchase the 5-pin version, you MAY receive a lock drilled for 6 pins but this is not guaranteed. If you purchase the 6-pin version, you are guaranteed to receive a fully 6-pinned cylinder. The 5-pin version is always a cylinder drilled only for 5 tumblers unless we run out of stock, and in that case we send out locks drilled for 6 tumblers, but pinned up as 5 pin cylinders.

  • If the 16 pins are all of different sizes, there will be a total of 5,765,760 combinations for the lock. Because there are 16 pins and 6 slots you do 16 permutation and then choose 6, which is basically 16*15*14*13*12*11. But then again that is if all the pins are different lengths.

  • How much? Out of work and thinking of becoming a locksmith. What do you think? Message me please

  • Ahhh.. I see. Thank you very much. I will be purchasing this lock soon. Thank you again for all the help and quick replies.

  • Oops, sorry, I asked the question wrong. I have a 20 piece currently, but am wondering if the practice lock would be a good investment. Thanks for the answer to my other question and the quick response!

  • Schlage keyways are more pick resistant due to the shape, so they are more of a challenge to learn to pick. Beginners usually like to start out with locks that have Kwikset keyways, then work into practicing with a Schlage keyway.
