Can we stop with the Coldplay comparisons? Elbow and Coldplay are probably laughing their holes off if they're reading these retarded comments. This is not Coldplay. This is not Coldplay - sad to see that the two most rated comments are about Coldplay. This is Elbow and its a fucking great song. Nothing else should be added!

All popular music (not to be confused with pop music -- wikipedia the term) is limited and simple and comes out sounding similar to other popular music. This is coming from someone who only likes popular music.

The point is that you can't call it plagiarism to use the same N chords when there are only M chords that are used in popular music in all and M is not huge compared to N.
