Over a one week period in 2009, we taped a variety of the trains going through the Feather River one after another. It's one of the great train watching spots in the world. However, it may never be as good as this year again. That's because the Donner Pass tunnel was enlarged by Union Pacific, so it could take the big container intermodal trains. Much of the traffic now is going that way and not through the Feather River. Although there are still coal and grain trains and various manifest trains, it's not nearly as busy as you'll see in this wonderful video. Thanks for enjoying it!

  • You're right, it's quite an astounding route and I first rode it while on the California Zephyr as a young Marine. I'm glad you enjoyed the piece. This route may never be as busy as when we shot the video, as the Donner Pass tunnel was being expanded to handle double stacks and UP was running everything thru Keddie Wye at that time. Now, the tunnel is open and heavily used. Once in a while, they do special passenger excursions through the Feather River route. Railfan sites may have the info.

  • a little close to the trains are we? Your lucky none of those cars had hanging straps or anything sticking out otherwise you may not have lost your head or a body part. Come on man, it's these kind of manorisms that give railfans a bad name and as a railroad conductor if I saw someone that close to my train, I would have called the police. You have to see it from our side, especially with terrorism threats to high. So come on man, use your head and don't lose your head

  • Cool videos. The FRC sure is a cool place. At 1:48 you say the trains come in from Sparks but they are really coming from Portola. Sparks is the eastern hub for the Donner Pass Route. No worries, just thought I would let you know.

  • Awesome

  • Great filming from Newman

  • Wow, amazing. I think I just spent the last 10 minutes in railroad heaven!

  • super

  • Man where is this area?

  • Apparently I wasn't read up on my Feather River information... the first minute of this video earned this route a spot on my bucket list; I must find a way to ride it.

  • great video!!!
