  • Wow, does this bring back memories. I was at a car show when I was a kid like a year or 2 after Donohue won the 500 and skipped the chance to get his autograph and years later I shared an apartment with a girl who got engaged to his son Michael, I had to dig up a Sports Illustrated issue from 1972 to show her just who her fiancee's Dad was

  • Look at all those people. I bet there aren't half that many people there on pole day any more. That's to bad.

  • WOW, i was there that day.

Lloyd Ruby in the red, white , and blue car.

front engine roadsters on the track

hard to believe how much has changed since then.......

  • Fantastic, those were the days , the cars looked great but all different,

  • I went to the 71 race and remember the early Donahue run and Revson

trying to catch Unser at the end. This is an excellent overview of a classic race

when it was as it's best. Brings back great memories.

  • this kind of racing is what made the Indy 500 THE Indy 500

  • Innovation, technology, new track records, excitment, and packed grandstands. That is what Indianapolis 500 pole day was all about. I sure hope the excitement like this returns to the Speedway.
