  • Great video I am new to constructing magnets, Do they overheat in use.I would be using a 12v battery.

  • tnx mate. it depends what wire u use, how many turns, how long u leave it on for etc. but there is a scientific way to find out. u turn it on... if u smell burnt plastic... it overheats :)

  • after 5 minutes or so it begins to heat up and the heat makes the magnet "less strong"

  • yeah the hotter the wire the more resistance the less amps the weaker the magnet (if it makes sence). what u want to do is put a light or whateva as a resistor so the wire does not overheat

  • Thanks - great tips. However, I'm curious;

    1) How did you find out that coat hangers make a really good core?

    2) Why do they? I thought soft (pure) iron made the best core and I'd assumed coat hangers were steel wire...?

    3) How do you hold them together for filing down and then to ensure they stay put in the spool? Just grabbing hold of a bundle doesn't cut it.

    4) Would it be ok/safe for me to use a cell phone charger/transformer as a power supply, rather than a battery?

  • 1. i use to own a commercial laundry so i had a box of them to try. 2. i dono. 3. i use a simple plastic or nylon clip. 4. cell phone charger will give u VERY little power mate only about 4V, plus you will have very little resistance with the coil so in my opinion the charger will burn out. good luck mate :)

  • I made an electromagnet with a DIARRHEA core. It worked like SHIT. :-D

  • if your going to do this don't touch the fucking capacitor in the microwave it could kill you if it is charged just watch out

  • Can I fill the core with iron filings? would that make a good core

  • Hi, nice vid i like it and can u tell me what type, voltage and amps of battery ur using.

  • very nice video, very good information, it has really helped me no end, thanks.

    Thom in Scotland.

  • @breakthemachine is that strong ehugh to fry electronics? useing the magnet?
