Yes, Uke does a good breakfall but it is sloppy to use your hands.May I ask their respective ranking?

I hate how the tori often looses his balance when he throws looks like he has no control

Hmm, now when I look at this kata again, it is not that bad than I thought a few years ago. I've learned that there are two different schools: one teaching that there must be "umpf" in the kata, and one that tells that kata must be like a silent river, where nothing breaks the surface of the water. This kata, of course, had some unnecessary (and even funny:) manoeuvers, but otherwise it's quite OK. Just a little bit of filing here and there. Uke must learn to strike properly.

IMO this isnt the purpose of kata. kata is "form" rather than "function" so to speak. learning to strike properly is important of course but better left outside kata, unfortunately, strikes are not allowed in judo randori. kata is what it is, the link to the traditions of the past.

Kata is the old recording format (before DVD or even VHS) to save the art for the future generations. What comes to the striking, it must be learned to allow the tori to perform his/her techniques properly. Every technique works on special occasions only.

of course you're right, but imo this is not the purpose of kata..it is to show base line mechanics of any given technique, so it can be concentrated on, no variations, no "what ifs" etc. it allows you to focus solely on the technique you are performing. later on you get into all the other stuff.
