The 2 primary problems with the rotary are the increased use of fuel and the wiper wear issue, in that order, due to the very nature of the rotary engine, pressure on the wipers increase with RPMs, As was pointed out, proper care and a Wankel engine is as good as any other.

dude, wtf is wrong with you?
my opinion: a rotary probably whooped your ass on a race
get a life...

@DrNorty piston ring vs apex seal ... apex seals wear at about a 10:1 rate compared to piston rings given the engine is well maintained and not thrashed upon... ive owned 3 2nd gen rx7 and i must say they are a nightmare . unreliable , torque-less , gas guzzler ... i could go on for days . ive seen my friend need new apex seals twice to three times a year on his stock 86 non turbo ... sad for him

@ventureelect Sorry on last thing was my comment was in regards to something that happened 40 years ago, most of us know that a modern engine normally has better fuel/power than those engines from 40 years ago.

I just got me a v6 Station Wagon and my FD RX7 which is stock BTW would not use much more gas than that.. I know that an RX8 uses about 10ltr per 100kms. We need to remember all RX's are sports cars and they needed to be compared to other sports cars not a Toyota Corolla L or anything like that.

@ventureelect If we take out "Turbos and Performance" and talk piston vs Rotary then yes a piston i would say is more forgiving in regards to servicing than say a Rotary, however i argue that any car should be well maintained anyway. I like the engine, its a simple design and only 3 moving parts compared to all the moving parts the piston engine has. I dont think todays Rotaries are "THAT much harder" on gas, it was over 40 years ago now that last oil crisis occured.

@DrNorty What do you think of the rotary. Is it that much harder on gas.

An hey Im not a all out Honda fan but they also make alot of power for there size and run good for a long time, not tryin to start shit just seen some of youns post about Hondas being "1/2 assed cars" and things like that. There somewhat compareable 2 a Mazdas Rotary in my opinion not in how they work but how they make good N/A power out of a small engine. Mazdas Rotary and Hondas VTEC engines are the only good N/A JDM engines I can think of off the top of my head and they both deserve respect

Does any1 know ware I could learn more about Rotary engines, like normal maintenance and up keep for a long running Rotary? Maybe a fourm someware?. I love regular piston engines but I've always been amazed by the Rotarys, there pretty cool desighns and they make A LOT of power esp for there size and seem relitivly simple

@DrNorty well said
The reason why 99% of cars are pistons was due to the oil crisis of the 70's Mass produced rotaries would of been the cheaper option over a piston engine and less moving parts but because they do tend to use more fuel that crisis pretty much killed the rotary engine. Was nothing to do with it blowing. I see RB26DETT and 4g63 Evo blow up just as much DUE TO INCORRECT Tuning or crap parts or just trying to push the limits.

Obviously aji8 is one of those people that don't maintain their car. I bet his 4cylinder is on the verge of blowing. Some people just don't understand that Rotaries, when well maintained, are as good, if not better then piston engines. "If it's something your not used to, you end up hating it before you get to try and get used to it" I think that's whats going on in their minds.
