@scream4judas his father is from Poland, but his mother is norwegian, and Jan was born and grew up in Norway, and afaik he's got norwegian citizenship
Anyway his daughter, Anja, also made some interesting music

Especially the solo of Garbarek (2:50) is real Mediterranean. Because Garbarek is playing in this specific harmony, alternately over the chords G minor and A flat major, the first and second note of the scale he uses, as well as the 5th and 6th note, are half notes (g-a flat and d-e flat). This gives the oriental feeling. The change of chords is typical Spanish and you hear it in Greece as well. Chick Corea has used it often too. By the way: his scale is called 'ousak' in Greece.
