Brian Wilson was not the only genius in the Beach Boys! This song by Carl Wilson was on the band's 1971 album Surf's Up, and while the title track (a Brian leftover from 1966) is the best thing on it, there are many other highlights. As I can't play jazz flute I've filled the instrumental section with guitar. I've also copied the reverse reverb effect Carl used on the vocals (same effect as on the lead guitar of How Soon Is Now).

I recorded this a few months ago and lost the video files - so this is just a spooky wander around my "studio" as the track plays out on my Roland VS2480CD.

  • Unreal, you never seize to amaze me.

Are you from England, do you have a myspace profile?

  • Thank you. Yes, search for "the primrose league" in music.

  • Great job! I never new this song was by the Beach Boys. I greatly appreciate you informing me of this.

  • Me neither, I believed (like most people) that the Beach Boys only made bad records after SMiLE was abandoned. Then a few years ago I turned on the TV to hear this excellent song on the closing credits of some film (which I still haven't watched, it was 'Almost Famous'). This lead to me getting Wild Honey, Friends, 20/20, Sunflower and of course Surf's Up.

  • two words: truly awesome!

  • Surf's Up is a cheery surfer hit? I think you're thinking of a different song, man. Surf's Up is NOT at all like their surfing songs from back in the day. It's a heartwrenching, heart felt ballad.

  • Nice!

  • @danielearwicker You should watch Almost Famous. It's wonderful!

  • i like it. i thought it was gonna be the boys but you got right down to the meat of the song and exploited it(in the best possible way). I think that post smile beach boys songs NEED to be recognized for their ingenuity and if doing a cover like this fills that need than sail on sailor lol

  • Excellent ....never knew anyone had the balls to cover such an iconic song ....and well !!!

  • @danielearwicker man, you should watch that film. 'Almost Famous' is a masterpiece for any good music fan. If you can, watch 'Untitled' (the 'Almost Famous' extended cut).

  • Fella, this is really, really good stuff. Saved to favourites.

  • Sounds great. Very good work.

  • Nice version indeedy boys would be proud!!

  • man, this is beyond cool! you are a visionary. make an album, if you haven't already. I'll buy one.

  • exactly. Surf's Up was a conscious play on words....playing off the old Surf-sounding songs. a dark and brooding social/personal commentary. cheers.
