@o0abdo0o, many pay the mafia for protection too. But the fact remains that Jews and Christians were the only ones allowed to keep their religion or avoid Islam without death and that was only if they bowed before Muslims in the street declaring that Islam was the better religion and allowed their women to marry Muslims.

That "special tax" that they had to pay, called "Jizyah" is not a form of oppression. Muslims were obliged to pay zakah, which is in fact a higher percentage than Jizyah. That special tax that non-muslims had to pay was the price of government-paid protection and services.
