@mdrosen9 Great video!!! How long before the areas you repair grow together independent of the stiches? I have a HH that was 3-4 cm when last checked.......now it is getting worse......regurgitating food.....yuck. I think the PPI's acutally make it worse because food feels like it sits in my stomach a lot longer, feel bloated and more prone to regurgitation.

@mdrosen9 You can also swallow food grade dye tablets before you go to bed (red), if you wake and see a lot of it in the morning.....well then, something is probably going on.

@hilaed I might have it and I'm worried about all the years of reflux and the damage it did to my esophagus.. I really hope I don't have Barret's.. In the other hand, my cousin had this surgery for his hernia and he was fine.

My gastroenterologist did not even mention this as a possible treatment. Is this only appropriate for certain types of hiatal hernia? How long is the recovery period?

In hospital recovery is 1-2 days, and you will need to recuperate for about 1 week. It can be used to treat all types of hiatal hernia. Medication can give you symptomatic relief of the heartburn pain, but does not stop the reflux or prevent the hernia itself from worsening over time. If it is a small hiatal hernia and an antacid medication is effective, then that is probably fine, but there is never anything wrong with a second opinion.

One of the easiest ways to diagnose a hiatal hernia is with an upper gastrointestinal swallow study (you drink some radio-opaque dye, and they shoot some x rays. If part of your stomach is above your diaphragm on the x-ray (easily distinguishable by a trained radiologist), then you likely have a hiatal hernia

god bless medicine man, one question, how dangerous is this op'?

Small risks of damage to the esophagus/stomach and some pretty major blood vessels in the area, but the key is good visualization and steady hands give safe and reliable results.

is this open surgery or is a camera on a tube slide inside a slit in the skin?

This surgery was performed using a rigid camera within a tube, passed through a slit made in the skin. The term is laparoscopic surgery (as opposed to open surgery).
