Mr Stobart, who built up the well-known lorry empire and ran it for more than 30 years, suffered what were described as "heart problems" yesterday and died this morning in hospital in Coventry, West Mids.
He took the Eddie Stobart business — started by his dad Eddie — and built it into the best known haulage company in the country.
Mr Stobart sold the firm to his brother William and business partner Andrew Tinkler in 2004
A statement on the Eddie Stobart company website today read: "It is with great sadness and regret that Stobart Group shares the news that Edward Stobart, 56, son of Eddie Stobart, passed away at 8.10am this morning at University Hospital Coventry, after heart problems yesterday.
"Although not involved with today's Stobart Group business, Edward was managing director of Eddie Stobart Ltd for over 30 years - a business started by his father Eddie.
Rest In Peace Eddie, You Did The Trucking Industry Proud.
