Obama focuses on the issues because his position on them are the only thing he can control. He trusts his campaign staff, but he cannot control them (neither can McSame), so he chooses wisely not to focus on his opponents' staff blunders to score points; instead, he moves the discussion quickly to substantive issues related to those blunders, an excellent strategic approach to the issues that is consistent with the new issues-based way of doing politics he has been promoting.
