Of course, prohibition may be a strong word. But:

1. Yug dharma would change and for us, bhagavatham explicitly discourages (part of panchasheel for kali yuga) alcohol

2. The priests would know their stuff when they claim that it is not allowed.

3. Some sects/homas may involve alcohol but they are strictly ritualized and with exact procedures to be followed.
