Extraordinarily rich people are an anomaly. I'm talking about the other '99%'. People abroad rent because it is either cheaper to do so, or they cannot afford a mortgage. I'm saying the perception of renting as freedom is a red herring. Who wants to rent when for the same money you can actually pay towards something which you will own at the end of the day? Why would you want to rent, when for the same money you can get a mortgage and buy the thing you are paying for anyway?

@TeifiValley123 PART 2 The irony is that it is lower income people who needed that deed handed over to them BUT better off people ironically do NOT need to own their homes. You will find in the world's richest capital cities a huge number of the wealthiest prefer to rent. It allows them to spin their lives on a dime and not have the burden of responsibility that owning does. Like private jets the wise rich rent them or pay a jet service only the vain insist on owning one.

@TeifiValley123 Sorry I do not agree the house owning thing is a red herring what we need is a society based on social justice not life and liberty burdening mortgages.
Renting is perfectly normal in many societies and people appreciate the freedom and flexibility. I certainly do not object to the concept of lower income family having lived in a property that is say public housing for many years, have a good record of paying rent and looking after the place that it should be deeded to them.

@anarchosolar i think not having a the worry of losing the roof you live under is a basic need. Its not conformity. It doesn't really matter whether you own the property you live in or not. Its not a nice feeling for some people trying to raise the money needed to pay rent every week, and the stress of knowing if youre made redudant you are effectively homeless. Renting means you'll permanently have this worry, and you end up with nothing to show for it. In my view its criminally unfair.

At 5:45 was Paxman making an oblique reference to the size of Ms. Allsop's posterior?

Kirsty Allsop is helping to push the culture of buy and sell for profit.

Trust Paxman to miss the point. The property owning concept is a burden of conformity.
