You might need to update your video drivers. That is QUITE unnatural. If drivers don't solve it, and if this is even occurring in games, you might wanna check your video card, period. :o
It seems to have been related the VirtualBox instance that was running in seamless mode, but it had been in the background for some time (days) and I can't figure out what triggered that nonsense. As my first experience with Win7, I guess having the GUI wig out is better than a BSOD, sorta.
The way Virtualbox wants to render its UI vs the way Windows 7 renders its UI might have created conflict afterawhile.
The actual cause may be difficult to find, but perhaps restarting the VM might help. For all we know, it could have memleaked. Also, it could have had a notification popup that caused it (What OS is the guest?)
Ubuntu was the guest. I seem to recall poking an icon in the hidden icon notification tray immediately before it happened. And with the way the tray is bouncing around the kicker, it makes me think that too. But, I have been unable to reproduce the behavior. The world may never know.. :-D
hahah, yeah, it probably was one of those quirks that only happen if two things happen at an exact time but not if you're just slightly off. oh well ;)
