  • Hi, I used to have the Gordon Gow edition. Could you please give me some words about the sonic differences between them? I've listened something about point-to-point work is not on the MarkV. Is it good or bad? By the way, The Beatles used to have McIntosh stuff in home in late sixties. Someone said that Paul McCartney don't buy Macs anymore. It seems he is rediscovering single-ended triodes. Do you know anything about it? I would like to confirm this information.

  • @TullioWalker

The MK-V is sonically superior to all previous versions of this amplifier.

I am sorry I do not know what Paul is using these days.

  • is that stainless steel now? i think i remember seeing something about newer ones having that instead of chrome.

  • @surfercrow

Yes all of there tube amps are using polished stainless now.

  • Run it in mono for 150 watts. Use two for stereo......

  • My post got clipped....The transformers on the new ones are, I believe, EI laminated ones and the design changed to not require cofilar windings, in the manner of Tim "Captain Catchfire" de Paravicini's derivation of the circuit (see Lockhart, Bereskin, Crowhurst et al). I have heard the new and the old and IMO when updated the old is better. Replace the coupling caps and change to metal film resistors in the signal and feedback path and get rid of input cap C1,C12 if no DC offset is anticipated

  • It's my understanding that the circuit of this amplifier bears a faint resemblance to the original.

All the old ones had basically the same circuit. The 225 lacked the final cathode followers and ran the high sensitivity 7591 tube, which was similar to the output tubes for the old AA5 radios (it did have a 6.3V heater) in that it needed little drive. The 275 adds another co filar winding and a couple of components. But with an update of parts I think they sound better than reissues.

  • i got this amp what i can say about him is SUPERB

  • I love this amp.

  • made for retards
