A tour of temporary and permanent outdoor kitchens. Includes cobville, O.U.R. Ecovillage, the bullock brothers farm, lost valley and others. Outdoor kitchens don't have to me elaborate and/or expensive. Plus, these outdoor kitchens are keyed more to communities and groups. Outdoor kitchens are also a great place for canning and processing the fall harvest on the farm. Salatin uses an outdoor kitchen for processing all of his chickens.

Outdoor kitchens are an excellent way to feed those farm interns! This video includes a lovely cob oven and cob bench.

And there is a quick peek at some amazing braided garlic.

  • Ack! I tried to reply to a post but somehow must have hit "remove" and the post is gone! Damn! And it was a good post too! Something about outdoor canning.

I wanted to say: I wonder if when canning if one should take steps to counter drafts. I imagine pulling hot glass out of the bath could catch a cool breeze and break the glass.

  • Nice. Any problems with animals in those outside kitchens? (rats, birds, etc)

  • I have not heard of any problems. Although I suspect that one clean up really well at all times or else problems could happen.

  • That garden looked dandy! Only thing that would get me is the bugs with the kitchen outside. I love cooking outside with solar ovens and wood gas stoves. Less clean up.

  • You make a good point about the bugs .... and at the same time, I have no memory of any bugs at any of these kitchens. I ate several meals at most of these outdoor kitchens.

  • Wonderful video and great sound! Reminds me of the summer I spent helping collecting slugs and harvesting in another Orcas garden. Got to stay in the screened in garden kitchen until a cabin opened up. Living and working and cooking and eating outdoors all summer was great. And I love that Lost Valley cob oven and bench!!

  • I think the cob oven and bench is from "O.U.R. Ecovillage" - lost valley has a nice cob bench, but I'm not sure if I have any pictures of it.

  • This place is really cool

  • I love the different ideas! Thanks a bunch! We are making plans to build an outdoor kitchen soon. Luckily for me, we live in Arizona so we can get more use out of one!

  • hmmm. reminds me of my friend's stomp grounds---lots of outdoor kitchens are set up---stomp dance ceremonies last for days... they leave all the kitchen gear year round...

  • Awesome video Paul. I'd like to build an outdoor kitchen under some kind of awning that backed right up against the entrance to a wofati cooler or freezer. It'd provide shade to the entrance of the cooler/freezer, and make for easy access to my food. Thanks for the vid!

  • Needed more room, lol.

Will get the wife to upload at least weekly updates to my youtube channel. Best of luck to you and yours. Ron

  • Always a Pleasure to visit your videos, and get ideas to use in my own fashion.

Going to be starting my own family cooperative farm thingy probably this Octoberish.

Moved out of the U.S.of A. and to the Philippines. They still have the Homestead Act here, and the wife has a large family. So the experience will be beginning shortly. I really like the little things you are doing. Keep up the good work.

Once we get going, and then have power and internet established, no time table for those 2 set.

  • Great concept. I think I would rather my kitchen be screened in. Sure would be easier and more comfortable to cook in the summer.

  • woodstove dangerous

  • i have lived and interned at several places with outdoor kitchens. i have NEVER seen any sort of pest problem or had any concern with this. weevils in grains, maybe, but you get those inside any regular pantry as well. most pest problems i have seen are inside homes.
