In this two-quarter workshop, filmmakers have the opportunity to make a 10-to-15-minute short film that is screened to an invited audience. In the first quarter, filmmakers develop, write, and polish their script for their short film under the guidance of the instructor while at the same time, through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises, they learn techniques for translating their script into moving images as well as the creative and physical requirements for directing a short film. Topics include casting, working with actors, collaborating with the creative team, camera blocking, creating the shot list, visual composition, and editing aesthetics. Two Saturday sessions taught by industry professionals provide a comprehensive overview of cinematography, lighting techniques, and sound. At quarter's end, participants have a screenplay ready to go into production.
