That's it man, one of my favorites....seeing mongo solo on that song live is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen....and that was when he had "slowed" down a bit in his later years. Mongo was the master at tasty 6/8 solos, love that stuff. thanks

I think the foot beat/pulse count would be: ONE two three FOUR five six - in 6/8 with the foot beating on the ONE and the FOUR so two of these counted phrases would pass for each drum phrase as you're playing them here.
It could also be said as 12/8 ; foot beating on 1..4..7..10..for each phrase.
I think you counted it with the bass-line as in the arrangement which plays 3 notes over the 2 foot beats or "3 against 2".
This keeps the pulse more "african six" ó "seis 'pa ocho" generally speaking.
No just simple wool gloves..my attic at this time of filming was cold and when my hands get cold I put the gloves on that's all that it is...
