The last picture was taken from a KC-10 and the camera man was about 2 feet away from me. We were on our way back from the South Pole after the midwinter airdrop by the C-141 and we had flown down together from Christchuch NZ to inflight refuel him after the airdrop.
I worked flightline and was specifically assigned as a mechanic on this airframe from 1979 to 1992. It has carried me all over this world and back again. I actually had a flight crew allow me some Left seat time over the Atlantic one time. It saw me go from Airman-Basic through to SSgt. From Trainee only allowed to wipe the struts, to Badge wearing Instructor teaching others about running Engines, swapping Engines and trouble-shooting multiple systems. It is sad to me personally to see her Die.
McChord 96-01. G n C nothing like a cold night with the external heater blowing hot air and gas fumes into the aircraft to keep us warm while we worked ;) AAAaaa the smell of a BBQ lol WhhhooooRaaa
I was one of the lucky ones to have flown on the c141 out of norton AFB calif 1983-86 what a awesome acft It saddened me to see her retired. I was a flight engineer and loved my job but got out of the airforce got tired of flying with EGO's those kind of people are dangerous to fly with.
