An Israeli billionaire born in Russia has been defeated in the election to elect a new mayor of Jerusalem. Arkady Gaydamaks candidacy proved rather controversial. Gaydamak, who is a businessman, a philanthropist and a founder of the Social Justice Party, is not allowed to leave Israel because of money-laundering charges. Some of his property has been confiscated because of unpaid debts, according to Russias newsru.com website. The election was won by secular candidate Nir Barkat.
