what???? tribe called quest and the roots failed to do what?!? your trippin..... guaranteed all those cats have mad respect for one another for contributing to the art. yall act like its such a thin line between the two worlds. how can you make one form mainstream and vice versa without being able to relate. thats always what got thru to me. the roots were a major influence, organic hiphop jazz. mainstream isnt anything but a label. they were influential before they blew up! had my respect then.

@SmooveTheKing Although I agree with you to an extent, it's never really been in the interests of those artists to bring it to the mainstream in the first place. They did it for the people, the music and the culture first and foremost...the fact that they ended up getting well recognized is just a by-product of their talent and devotion. Kanye aimed to venture out into pop structures but really subverted them, much respect, but it's not something the others strived for. New BEP is garbage though
