Vladimir Horowitz - live - Woolsey Hall, New Haven, Connecticut - November 13, 1966 - Debussy - Prelude, Book II No.7: La terrasse des audiences du clair de lune
That was beautiful ... this might sound strange, but I actually feel like the apparently vast distance between the recorder and the pianist in this recording somehow adds to the impression of watching the distant moon.
one of the things i like about these audience recordings is that we're finally hearing horowitz as he wanted to be heard - not with "those four big ... TANKS coming at you with those ... microphones! that's not how you hear with the ear, putting it right in that piano." (quoting from memory, canadian radio interview from mid-1970s)
