This footage of a little spotted kiwi (Apteryx owenii) emerging from its day roost (an underground burrow) was taken at the ZEALANDIA sanctuary in Wellington, New Zealand in July 2010 by conservation officer Matt Robertson.
Watch as the kiwi emerges from the burrow, gets his bearings and makes a small attempt to disguise the burrow entrance with leaves. He then begins to probe the ground for insects and worms.
ZEALANDIA: The Karori Sanctuary Experience is a world-first eco-sanctuary just 2km (1 mile) from the centre of Wellington, New Zealand's capital city. A specially-designed 8.6km (5 mile) fence keeps out the 13 worst pest mammal species, creating a safe haven for some of New Zealand's most endangered native animals.
Open to visitors 364 days a year, ZEALANDIA is a major tourism attraction and a must-do for anyone wanting to see rare birds and reptiles like tuatara, saddleback, kiwi and giant weta in the wild.
ZEALANDIA is managed by the world-renowned Karori Sanctuary Trust, and all proceeds from admission fees support the Trust's extraordinary 500-year vision.
