We saw the same thing in the Philippines. They also had these benches that the rider sat on and the 2 kids would push the cart with their feet, using the rails to push off of - sorta like propelling a scooter. The bench carts where for short distances to houses along the tracks.

Amazing. Ordinary people living the simple life. In a way it's very beautiful, and humbling to see. All these people have my respect and admiration.
