Eino Grön - Kuoleman paikka (1987)

Finnish tango singer Eino Grön recorded this Finnish version "Kuoleman paikka" of Argentinian tango "Por una cabeza" by Carlos Gardel and Alfredo Le Pera in 1987. Finnish translation is by Jukka Virtanen.

Hi! I'm Argentine and I found with surprise and pleasure this publication.

The original lyrics speak of a gambler whose horse came in second place and compare the races and the thrill of the game with the love of a woman.

Carlos Gardel was a fan of horse racing.

I love your tangos as does many Finns, so we've been translating them a lot. This one is one of my favourites. Funny thing about Gardel being a horse race fan, because Jukka Virtanen, who has translated this tango is also a known fan of horse races. No wonder, this translation is so great. @eskorbutin89 it also means the running position of the horse that is outside the leader. This is often very exhausting for the horse, both physically and mentally and they often 'die', i.e. give up, hence the name of that position.

@HighHeelWoman1975 yes, it's kind of difficult to translate because of the high use of idioms, I studied a little (just a little) Finnish, and when I read the lyrics it was tottally no sense, but then i thought, if someone who speaks little spanish, reads the spanish lyrics it would be tottaly no sense too. :)

@eskorbutin89 You're welcome! I love also the original version of this tango and I love Carlos Gardel! I think in good translation the feeling and idea is translated as sharp and perfect as possible, but also right way for the language one's translating to. This Finnish version is translated by a wellknown lyricist Jukka Virtanen, who's also a great enthusiastic of horse racing. I've understood, that he has translated "por una cabeza" in right way then, the idea is the same. :)
