Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009: Canadian activists protest their nation's mining of tar sand deposits for crude oil outside of UN climate negotiations in Copenhagen. In addition to emitting up to 70% more CO2 per barrel than typical oil production, mining of the Alberta tar sands uses huge amounts of water and natural gas to separate dense oil from the sand, destroys forests through strip-mining, and leaves behind lakes of toxic wastewater.
