I had the 400...didn't have new tubes, didn't have a decent person to work the eq so you get the full gist of what she's capable of. Never got to use her at rehearsals (they had GK already there & parking was far away). I did get to use her & my Ampeg 8x10 EN at a gig & just had the most awful tone and major lack of volume.
Maybe I just had a bad egg because this one sounds great.
I don't use slap technique but that doesn't stop me from appreciating what a bad ass bassist this person is.

@armagedonman1065 Its the best sound check I ever heard.. ; )
-
Nice amp, too bad the playing is gay
-
maan FOR ME mesa amplifiers along with hartke are the best(for bass),but mesa are tooooooo damn expensive :///
-
@slugworth63 Its the camera mic. The last 400+ I sold would peel paint off walls in all the frequency ranges. It's a coliseum grade amp.
-
wow a graphic eq that actually works
-
mesa delivers a fat sound. If the audio on this video didnt suck so bad you would get a pretty decent sound.
-
Doesn't seem to have much bottom end. Is it just the camera micorphone?
-
The slap sound from the Mesa is a bit harsh for my liking, but would be pretty suitable for stuff like Claypool and Primus.

I have 400+ but it really bother me .. in my country they usually put the bass thorugh the DI into the PA.... I don't know how to solve the problem for the sounds come out of DIit's really awful...

What Ampeg cab is this....Thanks :)

@psyber84 I guess the Bass 400+'s are the newest design, but I don't think they're all that different, really. The 400+ just has double the power of the 400. That may sound awesome, but my 400+ is actually too powerful. I can't move the master volume above 3 without instantly deafening everybody on the block. It does sound amazing, though. If you get the opportunity to buy a 400 or a 400+, definitely go for it.

Bass 400, which replaced the D180 in mid-1985. I Mesa's supply of 6550 tubes was cut short in the late 1980s and they were forced to sell the 400 with 6L6GC tubes, reducing its output to that of the D180. in early 1989 in the form of the Bass 400+. It was the same as the 400 in most respects but was powered via twelve 6L6GC tubes for nearly 360 watts of power. The 400+ was discontinued in November 2007. Could be older chassis.

@fatster240 I have a 400+ but it is dated 1986.I thought they only made the 400+ in the 1990s.And made the 400 s in the 80s.I thought it was weird that mine was dated 1986 it has 12 of the 6l6s in it.so i know its not the 400 but the 400+.Does anybody know what year they started making the 400+.I thought i was weird that mine is dated 1986.

@sherrjam "Slap is dead - nobody slaps, it is the bass playing equivelant to masturbating"
first of all, you are fucking RETARDED and live under a rock if you think no one slaps anymore, just because *most* bassists today don't does not mean that it is DEAD. Second, what the fuck does "equivalent to masturbating" even imply. I do have more raging to do at you, but i would hit character cap too fast, so i'm just going to commend you on using proper grammar and not saying "LULZ DIS IS TEH SUX".

I have a 90's 400+ and a 06 model 400+ few changes nothing major. Larger fuse on the newer models. A added 6600 slider on the EQ. 7 band vs. 6. The early model is rate 600 watts where the new model(the last year made) has no wattage listed on the amp. Both push about the same wattage compare next to each other. That's about all the difference in the + models that I know of.
-
@KMarine525 thanks for the response! does this mean that each amp with the "+" on the front is of the latest design? are the old ones to avoid?
-
@psyber84 Yeah, the Bass 400 initially had a power section composed of six 6550 tubes, which gave the amp 250 watts of power. In the late '80s, Mesa lost their supply of 6550's, which meant that they had to use 6L6's in the Bass 400, and that lead to severely reduced power, so in 1989, they doubled the size of the power section to use twelve 6L6's to create the Bass 400+, which can run at 360 watts into a 4-ohm cabinet (or 500 watts into a 2-ohm cabinet).
-
this is my dream amp! still dont know what is the difference between bass 400 and bass 400+. does anyone know?
-
@naptimewithturtles2 Dude that would have been good but the typo really throws off the rhythm.
-
The bass the player is using sounds poor - it is thin sounding , the action is too low and it sounds like stainless strings to me. The player is playing beyond his ability and sounds like he should concentrate his efforts on graduating high school. Unfortunatly this makes the Mesa Boogie 400+ sound terrible - this is an awesome amp - they DO NOT sound like this. Slap is dead - nobody slaps, it is the bass playing equivelant to masturbating. Get a groove dude.
-
Slap is time tested and proven. Anyone can play, but every once in a while there's someone who can play it like you mother, very fast and hard. Suck on that.
@mindbodylightsound10 why the fuck are you complaining about him playing slap? its just a technique, and dude, so many fucking people play "like that", what the fuck would you want it to be? i mean i guess he could have done some more finger style but come on. this is a perfectly good demo of a great amp. stop your bitching and learn to enjoy other styles.
