@Grimmwood most styles call it uchi uke, since it blocks to the inside. shotokan calls it shoto uke because the block comes FROM the outside. same block, just a different name.
While I am sure there is a history / reason why the names are switched ... this is, in most styles, Uchi Uke. Of the 4 styles ive had seminars / learning / teaching in, 1 called this Soto Uke. I suspect there is some connection between Naha-te, Shuri-te and Tomari-te and the naming of this block. I ( jokingly ) think to myself that some grandmaster some where simply got his names mixed up.
@jeetkunejimi In that case The arm can move back the way it came, That block would be Nagashi uke, to counter the next attack, even otoshi uke will do too! Remember he is teaching beginners here!
The elbow follows the fist through space. The fist is rolled over to keep the muscles and bones aligned throughout the movement.

2) Shidokan (志道館) is named by Katsuya Miyahira (4Dan), the signs meaning is:
Motive(SHI)-Way (DO)- Small Castle/Castle/Mansion (KAN).
It looks a lot like Kokunshinkai, in the way of thinking.
