Kaliuwa'a (Sacred Falls) - High Definition

These beautiful and very sacred falls are the site of a deadly landslide that occured on May 9, 1999. Seven hikers perished on that tragic day. The park and trail are now closed and patrolled by security but we managed to reach these wonderful falls nonetheless.

You have been warned, this hike is extremely dangerous with all the rock... slides happening and with the high risk of flash floods. It is also illegal to hike this and if caught, unlike Haiku Stairs, you could be fined.

Because this trail is closed, illegal, and out of respect for the aina, I will not disclose any help or clues whatsoever regarding the directions to the trailhead. If you do manage to find it, please respect the 'aina, do not shout or yell, take any rocks or plants out, leave trash, or do anything that would disturb the tranquility of the valley/canyon. It is said that once you enter the valley, you feel a very powerful mana that surges into you, as if the entire valley is alive.

Just wondering, When did the state open the park for visitors to hike into the valley? I'm surprised you folks never got busted or were fined for being at sacred falls... However it is different from the last time I remember seeing that place! It's awesome that you were able to catch footage of the falls. Thanks for sharing! : )

my high school playground in the early 80's - i was devastated to hear what happened in 99 - drove past it last month and was heartbroken to see it's all fenced in and the park sign has been removed and there's no sign of a memorial....so sad...
