This is the twelfth of Rodion Shchedrin's 24 Preludes and Fugues for piano. While implementing contemporary compositional techniques, these pieces show a very clear Bach influence in their use of counterpoint (the Prelude and Fugue form was itself an invention of Bach). This is considered the second great set of Russian preludes and fugues, next to those of Shostakovich. Performed here at the junior piano recital of Phillip Roberts, a student in music composition at James Madison University.
