jesus f@#k guys it's just a movie, of course it's not gonna be historically accurate, i thought it was a decent film, nobody knows for sure if he did live or if he was a story inspired by a myth, who cares? it's something we will never find out unless they develop time travelling in the next few years (doubtful) so stop wasting your time arguing over something nobody fully understands

My King, Your King, OUR KING

@zeynel13 I know, I've read Chretien of Troyes. You are wrong, however; History of the Kings of Britain was completed in 1136, and served as the basis of Chretien's romances. He wrote several stories which tied in with Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, using characters introduced in Monmouth.
-
actually, Chretien of Troyes, who is the one who wrote the first important novels around the legend of Arthur, his knights and the Graal, was born in 1135 and died around 1185. His works was actually written in old french and Arthur's 'brittany' is originally mainly the 'little brittany' that is in fact the french peninsula in front of england (it actually was either independant or depending from England 'til the mariage of Anne de Bretagne (Anne of Brittany) to the french king in 1491.

The first actual mention of Arthur in text is in Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the KIngs on Britain in the 12th century. It is the basis for the current Arthur legends, but is largely inaccurate (example: Arthur is portrayed as a British King before the rule of Emperor Constantine and was subject to the Roman court). The poems which you describe originally made no mention of Arthur (Artorius is simply the latinized form, and most medieval scribes wrote in latin).
-
The first mention of an "Arthur' (I forget what name he was given but it wasn't Arthur or Artorius, but has been identified as a name that MIGHT be as Arthur) was in a Celtic poem that has only survived in fragments - he was a minor character who interacted briefly with the two main characters.
-
There is a large poem about battles waged between the romanized British people against the Saxons, I think there were 7 (major) battles, like Badon Hill(?) , and in the poem it says that the British forces were led by a certain commander named Artorius, which is Arthur in Latin. This was not long after the Roman legions left Britannia I believe.
