This tutorial demonstrates how to use VSTi automation in Cubase to alter knobs and features of a VST instrument using graphs. In this howto I automate filter cutoff frequency and filter envelope of Nexus2 (by ReFX) and also the cutoff frequency and resonance of Sylenth (by LennarDigital). I use Steinberg Cubase 5.5 but the procedure should be very similar in all recent versions of Cubase.

  • hey thanks for the help!! what exactly did you do to get that beginning synth so wide? Is that just one synth?

  • @jditmer0 The lead synth is the preset "Aragon" from the Nexus expansion "Omicron 3" and it's a really wide sounding preset with many layers. It also performs nicely when altering the cutoff frequency.

  • Hahaha! Thanks! Such a simple fix, you helped me my good man!

  • @Brinemusic Great - glad you found it useful =) I think many (like I did in the beginning) look for the automation under the midi track rather than in the VST Instrument folder.

  • Hey im using cubase 5 and im trying to automate massive using the same method that your using but i cant find the ''fmodcut'' option. I only get Macro and Osc options.

  • @djkeith25 Hi - I haven't tried that instrument, but if you click "more" - do you still only get the Macro and Osc options? Some VST instruments may not support automation in this way - but you may still be able to alternate the cutoff frequency for an instrument using Midi Controller 74 ("Brightness") - see my other tutorial "Cubase Trance Lead Tutorial (Sylenth1) Part 1 by Imphenzia" at 8:15 to see how to do that.

  • @ImphenziaMusic ooo so Aragon plays pre-existing samples and is not a synthesizer? No way to change the waveforms or see how they were made?

  • This was actually very helpful, Thank you!

  • hey bro! this idea has Full version? I love it this melody
