Just a short demo of how to use homebrew through the Homebrew Channel to play video files. In this example I used a port of MPlayer for Wii, which I believe boots through Wii Linux. The video is just on an SD card in the Wii's front SD slot, and is a .avi encoded with Xvid. It should also boot from USB. You can easily google more information about the Homebrew Channel if you're curious.

It does NOT require a modchip, only the use of the Twilight hack for the initial install (the offical Homebrew Channel site is good about explaining what to do step-by-step and has a link to the wiki for this hack).

If you install the Homebrew Channel I highly recommended getting the Homebrew Browser (also easy to google) to easily find, download, and update any homebrew you want to run.

  • when i try to use my videos it just freezes.. i have 3.4U and its an mp4 file.

  • I've had issues with mp4s as well; it depends on the version of the player, the encoding, and just luck I guess. I'm sure it will work better in the future. I don't think it's your firmware's fault; if the Homebrew Channel is working, the programs launched from it should be fine as well, as far as I know.

  • do you put the video in the root of you're SD card

  • You put the video wherever you want. MPlayer lets you browse folders.

  • I tried playing a DVD on it, but it froze. I heard there was something I needed to do extra to make Mplayer work, like patch something. What do I need to do to make it work?

  • Well first of all you have to download a newer version of MPlayer or any other media player that supports the DVD library. Then you have to download and install DVDX, which actually installs the DVD library on your system. However, if you have a modchip you'll probably have to use the option of installing it through PatchMii. I haven't done it myself so I can't help you with the details or troubleshooting; you're better off looking it up online.
