The Velvet Rope was honored by the National Black Lesbian and Gay Leadership Forum, and received the award for Outstanding Music Album at the 9th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.[73]
singing a paean to homosexuality on the jazzy 'Free Xone' and climaxing (if that's the right word) with a bizarre lesbian reinterpretation of Rod Stewart's 'Tonight's the Night'."[71] Rolling Stone regarded "Free Xone" as the album's "best song", describing it as an "anti-homophobia track [which] shifts moods and tempos on a dime, segueing from a Prince-like jam to a masterful sample from Archie Bell and the Drells' 'Tighten Up'."[72]
i just cant get myself to like this song. i mean dont get me wrong i love janet with a passion but i just really dont like this song. smh i think it should of been more sensual. but yeah JANET ROCKS
Hi millie15k: I like your reasoning as far as it goes, especially, the DL/Low Key, but which person, "Cause I love you girl... (or)... cause I love you boy? WHY did she redact the line "don't deny your man's desire" for "this one desire?
hi rabdrake i personally think the this is between me you n you means the person she shared the experience with n her audience..im the biggest janet fan buh i could be mistaken it could be about a woman like adua78 feels.. janet does have a huge nack for sexuality buh i dun think she would put out a song standing for bisexuality cus she likes to stay low key..
yourengland: interesting possibility. But if the final you is the millions of listeners then who is the first you, the girl, the boy or both back to bi-what-you-may call-it!
Hi millie15k: Guess I got stumped on the redacting of "your man's desire"?
gotta disagree millie - janet said herself that she left the lyrics as they were because she has many gay friends and saw no need to change the lyrics just accommodate the masses.
"this is just between me and you and you": that's janet's comment on the inherent kinkiness of any love song. here's a moment that, in theory, is between two people in love, but when you put it on a disk and sell it, it becomes: "you, me, and the listener" (which of course means MILLIONS of listeners). you could say that every time you turn on one of these sexy songs, it's a threesome. janet's a lot smarter than people give her credit for, no?
