This documentary was published in 1981 and has recently been released on DVD. While I will be posting most of it, I've edited out parts of it. I would highly encourage people to look for and buy the DVD to see the entire program in DVD quality and with all the original songs and information. The DVD is available at http://www.selections.com/DVD2877/kings-college-choir-story and Amazon.

  • That's right. I recall seeing an evensong at King's many years ago and Stephen Cleobury didn't step out to conduct at all until the Magnificat. The choir did it all helped with the tenors on each side keeping the beat. That said they were doing one of the simpler preces and responses (Smith of Durham).

  • They call them Toppers

  • This film was made by Robert Chesterman. He put a second mortgage on his house to complete it, and afterwards continued to create documentaries about classical music for the rest of his life. A charming man of remarkable talent that I dearly miss, as I am sure do all of his friends. Prometheus Productions was his production company.

  • Love their top hats.

  • very interesting documentary . Thanks

  • beatiful thanks very much my prayers for you

  • If the director is playing the organ, or unable to conduct (probably going up into the organ loft during this procession) a choral scholar from either side will conduct. There is somebody on the other side doing the same thing.

  • that is odd indeed. i don't think he's playing a keyboard cuz if you'll notice, his fingers are moving when the organ notes are holding..i'v never seen anything like this before. must be a time keeper.
