Welding with protection has nothing to do with "growing a pair" or "being a man". Those of you that want to weld sleevless, go ahead, but don't get mad at people who are trying to lend advice about being safe. Welding rays cause skin cancer, it's as simple as that. If being a tough guy means you're not scared of cancer, then so be it. Go speak with a dermatologist and see how many welders he/she has treated.

I have some serious, permanent damage on my arms and knees from welding in shorts and a t-shirt. I was burned so bad, just from one hour of welding (my FIRST hour of welding to be exact), that my skin bubbled and peeled for a week. It 's been 3 years now and the skin on these spots is still rough and bumpy. I had no idea I was even burning myself at the time. The next day I woke up in excruciating pain and couldn't even figure out what had happened!

I welded with my TIG for about 3 hours straight, practicing, trying to learn it. I was wearing a welding jacket and some welding Gloves. The problem is that I didn't button the cuff. The absolute horrible burn the resulted caused agonizing pain for about 3 weeks and took about that long to start peeling off. It was just crazy terrible, about 10 inches down my arm. I still have a scar ! I will never ever never forget to button my cuff again and never try sleeveless. Cover up that SKIN !
