Not really, gold is a really soft maleable metal. It's just that all the games out nowadays have gold to display a sense of worth, and iron is commonplace. While gold may be more valuable or rare than iron, it's definitely less durable and strong. Since minecraft has no monetary system or currency, it makes sense that, armor and tool-wise, gold would fall below it. But, gold is very valuable for making other things in-game like powered minecart tracks, etc
